CIRM Bridges program trains CSULB students for cutting-edge jobs

The California State University, Long Beach student paper posted a nice story today about an extension to the school’s CIRM Bridges to Stem Cell Research award. They quote program director Lisa Klig:
"I'm delighted that CIRM was so pleased with our success during the first funding cycle of three years that they opted to extend the program for an additional three years," said Lisa Klig, director of the biotechnology program at CSULB.
The Bridges program trains undergraduate and master-level students in stem cell research, and provides for internships in leading California stem cell labs. Most of the programs are community colleges and California State universities, which wouldn’t otherwise be able to provide training in this cutting edge field. These students will help fill new jobs in California’s growing stem cell research industry.

The CSULB story goes on to say:
The CIRM training is then meant to lead to long-term career opportunities in stem cell research in California. Student interns receive $25,750 to cover tuition, fees and some living expenses.

As of now, 20 students have completed the program and 10 student interns are currently working in the labs this year. "We think this is an excellent opportunity for CSULB students to be involved in cutting-edge research in laboratories at UC Irvine and the City of Hope," Klig said.

Many proponents of stem cell research see it as a way to develop cures and treatments for injuries and illnesses in the future.

"The hope is that stem cell research will teach us more about developmental biology to test drugs, personalized medicine, and to serve as treatments and therapies," Klig said.
CIRM recently posted a video from a meeting that brought the Bridges students together near San Francisco (we blogged about that meeting here). At the meeting, 160 students from the 16 Bridges programs presented posters that describe the research results from their internships and learned about career opportunities in stem cell science:

You can see a list of our Bridges programs here. Those institutions are shown in purple on this map of California.
